Maya Angelou is a revered figure who was an influential author, poet and civil rights activist, and is noted for writing the literary classic "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." In addition to acting in the "Roots" miniseries, Angelou was Hollywood?s first female black director, and she was awarded over 50 honorary degrees including the highest civilian honor possible, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
