Chinese character hanging scroll. The characters along the left indicating that it was likely written by Shi Xuan, the Abbot of the famous Longhua Temple, in the spring of the millennium (2001). The four large characters are a Buddhist quotation poetically translated as, “Let the light of Buddha’s kindness and mercifulness cover every corner of the world!” The name Longhua meaning "Dragon Flower Temple". The temple is dedicated to the Maitreya Buddha. The first character is "Maitri, " meaning benevolence and loving-kindness. It is the first of the four sublime states and one of the ten paramis of the Theravada school of Buddhism. The cultivation of benevolence is a popular form of Buddhist meditation. The second character means "light" or "enlightenment" and liberation. The final two characters suggest "gaining" or recovery.
