Chinese embroidered kesi silk "forbidden stitch" textile or tapestry panel, Qing dynasty, 18th-19th century. The central field with blooming peonies and floral forms amid Buddhist wan symbols within quatrefoils. Executed in pinks, greens, and blues against cream ground.

The "Peking knot" also documented as the "seed stitch, " merited the title of the "forbidden stitch" due to its incredibly delicate and intricate nature, so much so that legend claimed it could cause blindness in those who practiced it. While there is no factual basis for this claim, the stitch was typically used only for fine detailing and small sections of embroidery.

Height: 23 in x width: 9 1/4 in.

Condition: There are some scattered, small losses to the embroidery throughout, particularly to the dark brown thread. Areas of silk shattering throughout, especially along the lower edge. Mounted to a later fabric backing.
