Johnny Meeko Sr. (Inuit (Sanikiluaq – Belcher Islands), b. 1933). Carved stone sculpture depicting a recumbent Inuk hunter figure. With finely detailed parka. Signed with disc number, further numbered "619-742-786," possibly an inventory number.
Inuit carved soapstone sculpture in the form of a pelican or a goose with a frog or fish within the grasp of its beak. Incised "619-742-786," possibly an inventory number.
(Recumbent figure) Height: 3 in x width: 7 in x depth: 4 1/2 in. (Goose) Height: 4 in x width: 12 in x depth: 9 3/4 in.
Condition: To the recumbent figure, there are losses to both applied elements which correspond to the pierced regions along the front of the sculpture; there is a total loss to the rightmost applied element, while there are partial losses to the upper and lower portions of the element along the left (the center remains in the grasp of the figure). Light scuffing along the lower left cheek of the figure. Light wear to the base. To the figure depicting a goose, there are areas of chiping along the toes and the extreme edges of the wings. There is a repair to the tip of one toe; minute chips along the break. There is a loss to the element which fits into the amphibian’s mouth. Light scratches to the surface, particularly along the wings.
