Southwestern Native American Hopi carved cottonwood katsina or kachina doll depicting a quoi-a or kau-a figure with protruding snout, 20th century. With white, red, blue, and green pigment. The mask may be lifted to reveal a carved face. Pencil inscribed along the interior of the mask, possibly dated "1990."
Height: 9 in x width: 3 1/4 in x depth: 3 in.
Condition: There are areas of glue residue along where the snout and ears are affixed to the helmet. Light wear including few small scuffs to the pigment along the extreme edges. There are areas of unevenness to the fingers along the left hand; however, due to the nature of the material, it is difficult to discern whether this is inherent to the artistic process or evidence of chipping. Light wear to the feet.
